Dear Mr Karas,<\/p>\n
Thank you very much for organising a seminar on Monday 27 June 2023 as part of the Article 17 Dialogues to mark the 30th anniversary of the EU Single Market, looking back at its achievements and looking ahead to future developments.<\/p>\n
The undersigned and several other members of the European Association for Free Thought (AEPL), a non-denominational organisation, attended the event and were given the floor.<\/p>\n
We have emphasised that the impact of these non-denominational organisations on the achievements and future of the single market is felt most keenly in the areas of the free movement of people and services, and consumer protection.<\/p>\n
More specifically, our organisation, AEPL, has played a significant role in helping to define and draft the ethical framework for digital legislation and, more recently, for artificial intelligence, drawing on the principles of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights and humanism.<\/p>\n
We have already set out our ideas in a comprehensive document discussed at a seminar organised by the European Commission in 2018, entitled \u00abAnother take on Europe\u00bb.<\/p>\n
We also set out our ideas in our three overarching contributions (on defence, migration and governance) posted on the multilingual platform for the conference on the Future of the European Union, which concluded in May 2022, and which were also forwarded to the European Parliament.<\/p>\n
We would like to express our appreciation for the fact that the seminar marking the 30th anniversary of the EU Single Market, which you organised, brought together philosophical and non-denominational organisations on the one hand, and churches and religious associations on the other.<\/p>\n
It must be said, however, that the number of speakers was not balanced, as there was only one non-denominational speaker compared with seven religious speakers.
